Born in 1940, Los Angeles and was a musical child prodigy. In 1961 turned pro and worked with Teddy Edwards, Chico Hamilton and Phineas Newborn among others. Made his recording debut as a leader in 1963 with "West Coast Vibes" produced by legend Leonard Feather. Spent six years with Herbie Mann and recorded many Atlantic LPs with him including the classic "Memphis Underground". Is considered by many to be the father of both "Funk Jazz" and "Smooth Jazz". Extremely prolific artist, has recorded over 50 albums in a career spanning more than 40 years.

Last of the great Traditional New Orleans Jazz clarinet players. Member of two legendary New Orleans Jazz groups in early part of career: The Basin Street Six and The Dukes Of Dixieland. Became one of the most popular musicians in America during the late 1950s as a featured soloist on the Lawrence Welk TV program. Immensely popular recording artist in the 1960s with three gold albums to his credit in that decade and over 90 LP recordings over the span of his career.

Still active recording and performing and now lives in Baltimore, MD.

Had 1 platinum and 4 gold LPs, plus 21 Grammy nominations in his five decade career. Had a million selling, #4 record in 1964 w/ Alan Tousaint's composition "Java". Recorded several popular duet LPs with Pete Fountain. Recorded the theme for the mid 60s TV show "The Green Hornet" that was also used in the 2003 film "Kill Bill" (Quentin Tarentino).
