The Happy Land Jubilee Singers began touring in 1945 and changed their name to The Happy Land Gospel Singers in 1947 after founder member Velma Bozman committed suicide. Clarence Fountain sang lead (as he had done since the group was founded) with new member Rev Paul Exkano. By 1953 when they began recording for Art Rupe's Specialty label, they were called The Five Blind Boys Of Alabama, Clarence Fountain say's that "The Five Blind Boys From Mississippi were doing 'really well' and they decided to name themselves after them".
